The brief
Negru Zi occupies the Streit House on Costache Negruzzi Street, three hundred metres from Union Square in Iași. It is two businesses sharing one address: a specialty coffee bar serving single-origin arabica, and a cultural venue running events across an amphitheatre for performance, an atelier for visual arts, and a terrace: seventy seats in all.
The name is a yin-yang. Negru is black and zi is day: dark coffee and white milk, and the two halves of the partnership that founded it, a geographer and an actress.
A venue that is also a programme needs a site doing two jobs at once: convincing someone deciding where to spend an afternoon, and convincing someone planning an event that the space is right for it. Those are different readers with different questions, arriving on the same home page.
What was built
Built by Silviu Chișcăreanu, before Seek Digital existed. It is shown here as his work, from before the agency had a team.
- One booking form that asks what you are booking
- The question is “What do you want to book?”, and the answer is one of five: the Atelier, the Amfiteatru, the Terasa, the whole location, or simply a table. A coffee bar taking a table for two and a producer hiring the venue for an evening are not the same transaction, and putting both through one form was the central decision of the build. Two forms would have meant two things to maintain and a choice made for the visitor before they arrived.
- Booked by the hour
- The form asks for a date, a time, and then reservation duration in hours. A restaurant booking is a slot; a hired space is a block of hours, and the venue prices it that way. Party size is 1 to 5+, which keeps the table case quick without breaking the hire case.
- The programme is a collection, not a page
- Events are individually addressable and the archive is browsable, so an event has its own URL to share instead of living inside a PDF or a story. There is a journal on the same footing. The menu, the events and the writing are the three things that move, and all three are editable in-house.
- Consent split three ways, before the form
- Analytics, marketing and personalisation are separate opt-ins, and the booking form carries its own explicit agreement to the terms and the privacy notice. The site collects a name and a phone number, so the consent had to be a real one.
- Built on Webflow
- Chosen so the team can keep the site current without a developer. For a venue whose programme is the product, that was the deciding factor.
What the site does
- Takes space enquiries through the site.
- Publishes the events programme where people are already reading the menu.
- Serves Romanian and English visitors from the same content, without a separate site.
The site is live, and the work itself is the most honest thing we can show you. negruzi.ro
